Bedbugs, lice, staph hit Simon's Rock

A Kendrick House suite with eight residents was given two days to evacuate recently after bedbugs were found in one resident's bed. Meanwhile, almost 10 students have been diagnosed with head lice, while one student has been found to have the easily communicable staphylococcus bacteria.

Student groups are denied permanent meeting areas

When construction of the Livingston Hall Student Union was being planned five years ago, a designation of specific areas to student groups and organizations was successfully completed. "Circumstances since then have changed drastically, including the expansion of campus with incoming students," said Associate Dean of Student Affairs Bob Graves.

We've all done it: complained about the dining hall. There's not enough food. The food there is isn't good. There are too few vegan options. Freshness is an issue. "The food would sit out for hours and get nasty. The salad was generally pretty old," said first-year Laura Byrne.

Facebook becomes tool to rally support for Myanmar democracy

On Sept. 28, the main Internet link in Myanmar was cut and many of the country's newspapers were forced to halt production after the country's military regime threatened further anti-junta protesting. Still, this hasn't stopped students from rallying support for the Burmese people through the popular social networking Web site Facebook.

Pride posters kept in the closet at U. Utah

After several hours of photo shoots and layout design, Bonnie Owens marveled over what she had created. Owens, an intern at the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center at the University of Utah, received the assignment of creating posters to advertise events during the weeklong Pride celebration, and used students from the Queer Student Union as models.

Bush signs College Cost Reduction Act

President Bush signed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act into law Thursday, after Congress put up a nine-month battle to pass the legislation that will increase financial aid for college students. The law increases the maximum federal Pell Grant award from $4,050 to $5,400 over the next five years and more students will be eligible for the grant, according to U.
